The Climate & Health Data Jam invites WashU faculty, staff, postdocs, and students to blend creativity and problem-solving as they explore data at the intersection of climate, environment, and human health. This collaborative, half-day data exploration will offer a dynamic space for participants to uncover new insights and generate innovative uses for real-world datasets.
Participants will team up to analyze curated datasets relevant to the Missouri and bi-state region, exploring topics such as extreme rainfall and heat, disease, social vulnerability, and infrastructure impacts. With guidance from facilitators and “data champions” with expertise in the different datasets, teams will work together to develop visualizations, models, and analyses related to climate impacts in Missouri.
The event celebrates the idea that research is a creative process; one that thrives on curiosity, play, and interdisciplinary exchange. This event is open to anyone with a background or interest in climate, health, policy, data science, GIS, or any related field. Whether you’re new to coding or a seasoned data scientist, Climate & Health Data Jam will be a welcoming space to noodle, learn, and contribute.
Goals
The goal of this half-day workshop is to bring together WashU students, faculty, post-docs, and staff to discover patterns and insights, generate new ideas, and make connections among disparate climatic and health datasets.
More broadly, the event aims to:
- Foster collaboration among WashU researchers and students across disciplines engaged in health, climate, and policy.
- Build community around shared datasets and methods to spark new partnerships and future projects.
- Explore and publicize data resources, especially those relevant to the St. Louis region and Missouri.
- Encourage creativity and experimentation in data visualization, interpretation, and communication.
- Seed ideas for student projects, grant proposals, white papers, or policy briefs
