DESCRIPTION:\n\nMore information here\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: A fundamental challenge of atmospheric chemistry is bridging the gap between the detailed molecular-level knowledge generated by laboratory experiments and computationally intensive large-scale models. I will discuss our recent progress in automated model reduction\, and case studies illustrating my group’s approach using process models to: (a) extract kinetic parameters necessary for modeling novel chemistry from laboratory studies (b) evaluate the potential impact of that chemistry under ambient environmental conditions (c) parameterize these processes for large-scale modeling and (d) focus and inform future laboratory studies. I will also discuss recent laboratory work related to the stratospheric heterogeneous chemistry of candidate Stratospheric Aerosol Injection materials and implications for their potential impact on stratospheric ozone.\n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:\n\nMore information\n\n\n\n\nTitle: Chasing disinfection by-products through the pipes\, determining which are most important\, and uncovering wildfire impacts on drinking water\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\n\n\nDisinfection by-products (DBPs) are unlike traditional contaminants because they are not already present in environmental waters\, but form during drinking water treatment. They are formed by reactions of natural organic matter and disinfectants used to kill harmful pathogens. Eleven DBPs are currently regulated by the U.S. EPA\, but more than 700 have been identified\, many of which are more toxic. Part 1 of this seminar will detail results from a recent study to “chase” DBPs through the pipes of drinking water distribution systems\, which reveals that your exposure depends where you live relative to the plant. Part 2 will cover our recent work investigating impacts of urban wildfires on drinking water. Part 3 will detail a Forcing Factors Study conducted across the U.S. where we determined the main DBP drivers of toxicity in drinking water. Finally\, we offer some treatment solutions to make water safer.\n

DESCRIPTION:\n\nMore information\n\n\n\n\nAbstract:\n\n\n\nHorizontal gene transfer (HGT)\, the movement of DNA between organisms\, is central to microbial community function and evolution. If harnessed properly\, HGT could be used to engineer microbiomes for bioremediation\, selectively kill pathogens\, or recover valuable resources from wastewater. However\, critical knowledge gaps remain that prevent successful and reproducible precision engineering of environmental microbiomes via HGT\, such as how to best deliver functional genes\, how to metabolically engineer unculturable microbes\, and how to identify the environmental conditions that promote the stability and function of a gene after HGT. In this talk\, I describe a novel tool for high-throughput and quantitative measurements of HGT in microbial communities that uses microbial memory to record participants in gene transfer. We apply this tool to study the host range of plasmids and bacteriophages in wastewater microbial communities. We also use it to track the spread and persistence of an engineered plasmid with a dioxygenase gene introduced in a soil microbial community to enhance polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon biodegradation.\n

Her work focuses on the changing North and our relationship to nature and each other. Through visual art\, community engagement\, curation and advocacy\, Sonya works to create opportunities to feature Indigenous voices and contemporary artwork that inform and encourage social action. Traditional women’s work taught her to appreciate the intimacy of intergenerational knowledge and material histories. These experiences and skills allow her to examine connections between Western and Indigenous cultures. She lives and works in Anchorage\, Alaska. \n

Dr. Patania will present two case studies from her own geoarchaeological research\, one from the Ordos desert and one from Sicily\, where presence or absence of water dictated human arrival\, occupation patterns\, and subsistence strategies during interglacial and glacial periods. The data Dr. Patania will discuss has wider implications for themes of human dispersal\, including discussions of cultural transmission and possible connections with other hominin groups like Neanderthals and Denisovans.\n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to all. DESCRIPTION:\nBy: Martin Whiting - School of Natural Sciences\, Macquarie University\, Sydney\, Australia   \n\n\n\nDescription: Lizards offer a unique opportunity to better understand the early evolution of sociality and family living because unlike some mammals and birds with complex sociality and co-operative breeding\, they have relatively simple forms of parental care and sociality. Among lizards\, the Australasian Egernia group of skinks are particularly unique because they have a relatively high incidence of family living. They also have a wide range of sociality within a single clade\, from solitary to pair-bonding to nuclear families and species that live in societies. My talk will span multiple scales\, including field studies\, behavioural experimental studies under semi-natural conditions\, lab-based mechanistic studies of parent-offspring bonding\, and finally\, comparative studies that uncover the drivers of family living in lizards. I will discuss how particular traits and factors\, such as viviparity\, habitat availability\, predation risk and signaling system all converge to facilitate the emergence of family living and complex sociality. And by extension\, how relatively small changes to the physical and social environment can shape sociality.\n\n\n\n\n

Students graduating\, going abroad or simply tidying up can donate usable goods instead of throwing them away. These goods can be reused within our campus community through the Circularity Center and by people and organizations in the St. Louis area.\n\n\n\nShare Our Stuff is hosting a sorting day to organize the donations we receive and refresh the stock at the Circularity Center. We expect to sort through lots of clothes and small household items. In addition\, volunteers will help refresh the clothes bins currently at the Circularity Center.\n\n\n\nIn return for their time\, volunteers will have first pick to take home choice items they discover during sorting (up to 5 lbs per hour volunteered). DESCRIPTION:\nAbout Re-SPLAM\n\n\n\nHow will we build differently in a circular economy? What new systems have to be invented to make efficient use of scarce resources? Re-SPLAM [Reclaimed Spatial Laminated Timber] is a pavilion that demonstrates how smaller wood elements salvaged from homes across Chicago can be repurposed and engineered into a larger structural system. Tapping into an often overlooked reserve of existing building materials\, this circular approach not only prevents timber from being landfilled and preserves its sequestered carbon\, but also eliminates the need for new raw materials. Prominently sited in the South Boeing Gallery in Millennium Park\, the pavilion is a prototype for a system that\, if applied at a large scale\, could greatly reduce our burden on a scarce global resource while meeting the needs of future generations.\n\n\n\nCredits\n\n\n\nChicago Architecture Biennial\n\n\n\nSkidmore\, Owings & Merrill (SOM)\n\n\n\nWashington University in St. Louis Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts\n\n\n\nMid-America Carpenters Regional Council\n\n\n\nNorcon\n\n\n\nSimpson Strong-Tie\n\n\n\nReuse.Studio\n\n\n\nRebuilding Exchange Chicago\n\n\n\nMillennium Park\n\n\n\nHow to access the South Boeing Gallery\n\n\n\nEnter Millennium Park via the entrance at the corner of S Michigan Ave and E Madison St.\n\n\n\n\nLearn more here\n\n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:\nAbstract:\n\n\n\nA sustainable global economy necessitates the hyper-efficient utilization of limited resources (water\, food\, and energy)\, while minimizing environmental footprints. Dr. Tong’s research program advances the frontiers of sustainable chemistry and bioresource engineering by integrating novel self-assembly methodologies\, fundamental reaction mechanistic exploration\, and transformative artificial intelligence (AI) frameworks. Her research focuses on resolving the interconnected systems in the FEW nexuses through 1) developing advanced sensors/devices for in-line\, highly accurate\, and abundant data collection for water reclaiming\, food quality surveillance\, and nutrient tracing. 2) integrating unified physics-machine learning (ML) hybrid models for prediction\; 3) applying efficient RL algorithms to train optimal policies for system control and operations for sustainable processes. By bridging molecular-level discovery with system-level optimization\, these technologies provide scalable solutions to enhance the circular bioeconomy and ensure long-term resource resilience.\n\n\n\n\nLearn more here\n\n\n\n\n\nVirtual option available\n\n\n\n\n\n
